Some of your teeth are missing. Is it worth to pay for dental implants ?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are drilled and anchored into your jawbone. This cosmetic procedure is very popular with dentists and has high costs associated with it.

The implants' recommendations are often abused by dentists, in no small part due to their high costs. Sometimes dentists recommend it to patients, who don't have enough depth left in their jawbones to hold those implants or to use them effectively.

Is this procedure right for you? The answer depends on how you lost those missing teeth in the first place. If you lost them in an accident, you are young and your jawbone structure is vigorous and healthy, chances are that your implants will take root with time and some luck.

However, if your teeth were lost due to deterioration of your jawbones, there is no chance in the world that the implants can stop this process.

Most of the time, teeth are lost because of the condition known as receding jawbone structure. It can happen during advanced stages of periodontal gum disease, or because of advanced age. Usually those two factors combine to gradually weaken the bone tissues, until they can no longer hold the teeth in place.

If such is the case, chances are very slim that your dental implants will stay in your mouth for a long time, or that you will be able to use them effectively for chewing. Much bigger probability is that all the expenses and pain associated with this minor surgery will result in a dismal failure.

Since there is no warranty on such implants, your dentist can always claim that the implants did not take hold because of the deteriorated state of your jawbones. He will be correct, but he should have known that beforehand.

Always ask for an independent second opinion, and preferably not from another cosmetic dentist.
